What is a Mole

Apart from a small burrowing mammal that is.

A mole is the number of atoms in 1 gram of Hydrogen. It is used as a measure in chemistry because the number of molecules or atoms in a given weight varies according to how heavy the molecule or atom is. For example 1 mole of oxygen atoms weighs 16 grams. Water is H20 - that is 2 atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. So one Mole of Water contains 2 moles of hydrogen atoms (2 grams) and 1 mole of oxygen atoms (16 grams) therefore a mole of water weighs 18 grams.
